Iron Ore
Iron Ore is a naturally occurring mineral resource and one of the most important raw materials for the global iron and steel industry, serving as the primary source of iron used in the production of pig iron, direct reduced iron (DRI), sponge iron, and steel products. Commercial iron ore is mainly composed of iron-bearing minerals such as hematite, magnetite, goethite, and limonite, with hematite and magnetite being particularly important because of their relatively high iron content and suitability for beneficiation and metallurgical processing. The quality and commercial value of iron ore are determined by parameters including total Fe content, FeO, silica, alumina, phosphorus, sulfur, moisture, particle size, and loss on ignition, making consistent chemical composition and suitable physical characteristics essential for efficient steelmaking operations. Iron ore is generally extracted through open-pit mining, followed by crushing, screening, grinding, magnetic separation, gravity separation, flotation, or other beneficiation processes depending on the mineralogical characteristics of the deposit. These processes are used to increase iron concentration, remove unwanted gangue minerals, control particle size, and produce a consistent feedstock suitable for downstream metallurgical applications. After beneficiation, the material may be classified into different commercial products according to particle size, iron grade, and intended processing route, allowing manufacturers and steel producers to select the appropriate grade for their production systems.
Iron Ore is commonly supplied as lump ore, fine ore, concentrate, pellet feed, and iron ore pellets, with each form serving a specific industrial purpose. Lump iron ore consists of relatively coarse particles and can be charged directly into suitable blast furnace operations, while iron ore fines are generally used for sintering or pellet production because their smaller particle size requires agglomeration before efficient furnace charging. Iron ore concentrate is produced after beneficiation and contains a higher proportion of iron with reduced levels of silica and other impurities, making it suitable for sintering, pelletizing, and direct reduction processes. Pellet feed is a finely ground concentrate designed for pelletizing plants, where it is agglomerated into uniform pellets that provide controlled permeability and consistent furnace performance. Iron ore pellets are hardened agglomerates with controlled size and chemical composition and are widely used in blast furnaces and direct reduction plants. Depending on the deposit and processing route, commercial specifications may include Fe grades such as 58%, 60%, 62%, 64%, 65%, and higher, while exact impurity limits and particle-size distributions vary according to the buyer’s process requirements. The major advantages of quality iron ore include high iron recovery potential, consistent metallurgical performance, efficient handling, suitability for different steelmaking technologies, and the ability to be customized through beneficiation and agglomeration processes to meet specific customer requirements.
Iron Ore can be supplied according to agreed chemical and physical specifications, including Fe content, silica, alumina, phosphorus, sulfur, moisture, FeO, and particle-size distribution, with laboratory analysis and quality documentation available according to the commercial contract and shipment requirements. Packaging and transportation methods depend on the product form, order volume, destination, and buyer’s handling facilities, with bulk vessel shipment being widely used for large-volume international transactions and suitable bulk containers, jumbo bags, or other industrial packaging being available for selected quantities and product forms where required.
