Sodium nitrate is white , deliquescent , solid and very soluble in water. It is composed of white spherical particles that sometimes also known as nitrate of soda, soda niter. As a strong oxidizing agent, sodium nitrate is used in a variety of applications across many industries. This compound produces nitrate anion (NO3−), which is a famous useful ingredient in various reactions performed on industrial applications to produce fertilizers, food preservatives, explosives, glass and pottery enamel and smoke bombs.

Sodium nitrate acts as a corrosion inhibitor in the steel coating process, creating a surface magnetite layer. Since it has a high melting enthalpy of about 178 J/g; hence it can be used as an ingredient for thermal recovery.
