Ferrochrome

Ferrochrome (FeCr) is a ferroalloy primarily produced by smelting chromite ore in submerged arc furnaces, with chromium and iron as its main metallic constituents. It is an essential alloying material for stainless steel and other chromium-containing steels, where it provides corrosion resistance, hardness, strength, and improved resistance to oxidation at elevated temperatures. Commercial ferrochrome is generally classified according to chromium content, carbon level, and other alloying or impurity elements, making the appropriate grade selection important for different steelmaking processes and final product requirements.

The main commercial types include High Carbon Ferrochrome (HC FeCr), Charge Chrome, Medium Carbon Ferrochrome (MC FeCr), Low Carbon Ferrochrome (LC FeCr), and, for specialized applications, extra-low carbon grades. High carbon ferrochrome is widely used in conventional stainless steel production because of its high chromium content and economical alloying performance. Charge chrome is commonly supplied for large-scale stainless steel production, while medium- and low-carbon ferrochrome are selected when tighter control of carbon content is required. Ferrochrome is typically supplied in bulk, big bags, steel drums, or other industrial packaging suitable for safe handling, transportation, storage, and charging into furnaces.

Ferrochrome is mainly consumed by stainless steel mills, alloy steel producers, foundries, and manufacturers of chromium-bearing specialty alloys. Its applications include stainless steel, heat-resistant steel, tool steel, alloy steel, castings, and other metallurgical products requiring controlled chromium additions. Important purchasing parameters include chromium percentage, carbon content, silicon, phosphorus, sulfur, particle or lump size, moisture, and overall chemical consistency. Depending on the production process and customer requirements, ferrochrome can be supplied in lump, crushed, screened, or sized forms to support efficient furnace charging and accurate alloy addition.

FAQ Ferrochrome

Ferrochrome is mainly used as a chromium alloying additive in stainless steel, alloy steel, heat-resistant steel, tool steel, and various metallurgical applications.
The main commercial types include High Carbon Ferrochrome (HC FeCr), Charge Chrome, Medium Carbon Ferrochrome (MC FeCr), Low Carbon Ferrochrome (LC FeCr), and Extra-Low Carbon Ferrochrome.
Commercial ferrochrome commonly contains approximately 50–70% chromium, although the exact content depends on the grade and producer specification.
Ferrochrome is commonly supplied as lumps, crushed or screened material and can be packed in big bags, steel drums, or shipped in bulk according to customer and transportation requirements.
Key factors include chromium and carbon content, silicon, phosphorus, sulfur, particle size, chemical consistency, packaging, and suitability for the intended steelmaking or foundry process.
