Aluminum Alloy 5005
An Aluminum Alloy is a composition consisting mainly of aluminum to which other elements have been added, including iron, copper, magnesium, silicon, and zinc. The addition of elements to the aluminum gives the alloy improved strength, workability, corrosion resistance, electrical conductivity, and/or density, compared with the pure metallic element.
The alloys are classified and named according to the amount and type of the alloying metals . Given widespread applications across industries, selecting the right aluminum alloy type for a specific end-use is crucial. Just slight differences in chemical properties can drastically alter strength, workability, corrosion resistance, and electrical conductivity of the alloy.
Aluminum 5005 is a medium strength aluminum alloy with a small amount of magnesium (Magnesium: 0.5% – 1.1%) as its primary alloying element. It has good formability, and may be suitable for applications that require bending, spinning, drawing, stamping and roll forming.
It is a member of the 5000 series of aluminium-magnesium wrought alloys. As such, it is not used in casting. It can attain moderate to high strength by cold working, and has relatively high welded strength compared to other aluminium alloy families.
