The excitation winding is powered by a DC voltage Vw. The excitation current Iw in that winding produces a magnetic field that penetrates the armature.
The armature winding is powered by DC voltage V via a commutator and brushes, which causes the flow of current I. As a result of the magnetic field and the current, a force is acting on the armature, which starts rotating. The purpose of the commutator is to ensure the current flow through the relevant parts of the armature windings, so that the force acting on the armature is maximum.
