Linear Alkyl Benzene (LAB)

Linear Alkyl Benzene (LAB) is a high-volume industrial chemical widely used as the primary raw material for the production of Linear Alkylbenzene Sulfonate (LAS), one of the most important surfactants used in modern detergent and cleaning formulations. LAB is an aromatic hydrocarbon characterized by a linear alkyl chain attached to a benzene ring, and its controlled molecular structure provides excellent performance during sulfonation and subsequent detergent manufacturing processes. Commercial Linear Alkyl Benzene is typically produced from linear paraffins through a series of controlled chemical conversion steps, beginning with the preparation and purification of suitable linear paraffin feedstocks followed by dehydrogenation to produce linear olefins. These olefins are then reacted with benzene through an alkylation process using an appropriate catalyst system, after which purification and fractionation are carried out to achieve the required commercial quality. Iranian modern LAB production technologies are designed to control molecular distribution, minimize unwanted by-products and provide consistent purity, color, acidity and performance characteristics, making the product suitable for large-scale detergent and surfactant manufacturing. The final product is normally a clear, colorless to pale yellow liquid with a characteristic hydrocarbon odor, low water solubility and good compatibility with downstream sulfonation processes.

Linear Alkyl Benzene grades are generally differentiated according to purity, molecular weight distribution, alkyl chain range, bromine index, color, acidity and other parameters that influence processing performance and final surfactant quality. Common commercial LAB grades are based on linear alkyl chains within the C10–C13 or C10–C14 range, with C10–C13 LAB being particularly common in household and industrial detergent applications. High-purity LAB grades are preferred where consistent sulfonation efficiency, low impurity levels and stable product quality are important, while specifications may be adjusted according to the requirements of detergent manufacturers and sulfonation plants. LAB is mainly used for manufacturing Linear Alkylbenzene Sulfonate (LAS), which is subsequently incorporated into laundry detergents, dishwashing liquids, liquid cleaners, powder detergents, industrial cleaning agents and other formulated surfactant systems. Due to its linear molecular structure, LAB enables the production of readily biodegradable anionic surfactants with strong detergency, good foaming characteristics and effective grease and soil removal properties. In addition to detergent applications, LAB can be used as an important intermediate in the broader surfactant industry where controlled feedstock quality and reliable chemical performance are essential.

Linear Alkyl Benzene ( LAB)  is commonly supplied in bulk quantities according to the technical requirements of detergent producers, surfactant manufacturers and chemical processing companies. Commercial packaging options may include ISO tanks, flexitanks, bulk tank trucks, drums and other suitable liquid chemical containers, depending on transportation conditions, customer requirements and shipment volume.

FAQ Linear Alkyl Benzene (LAB)

Linear Alkyl Benzene is primarily used as a feedstock for producing Linear Alkylbenzene Sulfonate (LAS), which is widely used in laundry detergents, dishwashing products, household cleaners, industrial detergents and other surfactant-based formulations.
LAB is generally manufactured by dehydrogenating linear paraffins to produce linear olefins and then alkylating benzene with these olefins under controlled catalytic conditions, followed by purification and fractionation to achieve the required commercial specification.
Commercial LAB is commonly supplied in grades based on C10–C13 or similar linear alkyl chain distributions, with specifications varying according to purity, molecular weight distribution, bromine index, color, acidity and other parameters required by the end user.
Industrial buyers should evaluate purity, alkyl chain distribution, color, bromine index, acidity, moisture, density, batch consistency and suitability for sulfonation because these parameters can influence the efficiency of LAS production and the quality of the final detergent surfactant.
LAB can be supplied in bulk tankers, ISO tanks, flexitanks and drums, with bulk transportation generally preferred for large-volume detergent and surfactant manufacturing operations and drums used for smaller industrial quantities.
