Solution Styrene Butadiene Rubber (SSBR) is a synthetic rubber produced by polymerizing styrene and butadiene in a solution, typically using a lithium-based catalyst.

Polymerization is initiated by alkyl lithium compounds. Water and oxygen are strictly excluded. It’s known for its excellent physical and viscoelastic properties, making it a preferred choice for high-performance tire treads, particularly those designed for low rolling resistance , improved wet grip and good wear resistance. . It’s also used in other applications like conveyor belts, footwear, and industrial rubber products. SSBR offers a balance of good mechanical properties, low rolling resistance, and wear resistance, making it suitable for demanding applications.

While both SSBR and emulsion SBR (E-SBR) are types of SBR, SSBR generally offers better control over molecular structure and performance characteristics, particularly in tire applications.
