Pozzolanic Cement

Pozzolanic cements that are also called PPC cement , are mixtures of Portland cement and a pozzolanic material that may be either natural or artificial. The natural pozzolanas are mainly materials of volcanic origin but include some diatomaceous earths.

Hardening of pozzolanic cement pastes can result from the reaction between pozzolana and the lime that is added to the mix as hydrated lime or is produced following hydration of Portland cement silicates. The pozzolanic reaction does not alter cement clinker hydration; it complements and integrates the hydration process because it results in a lower portlandite content and an increase in calcium silicate hydrates.

Pozzolanic Cement is Used in:

Hydraulic structures, marine structures, construction near the sea shore, dam construction etc.
Pre-stressed and post-tensioned concrete members.
Masonry mortars and plastering.
Decorative and art structures.
Manufacture of precast sewage pipes.

Pozzolanic cement has very good resistance against sulphate attack hence is used in hydraulic structures, marine structures, construction near the sea shore, dam construction etc. It reduces the carbon monoxide emission from the concrete making it environmental friendly. As the Pozzolano materials are very fine, it can fill gaps between the reinforcement and aggregate , thus reducing the shrinkage, honeycomb formation and bleeding can be reduced, which in turn increases the strength and durability of concrete.
