Methylene Diphenyl Diisocyanate (MDI)
Methylene Diphenyl Diisocyanate is produced by a 4 steps reaction based on benzene as feedstock. The Polymeric MDI so called Crude MDI contains monomeric MDI and products with higher MW (pMDI).
The commercial form of MDI is primarily used to produce polyurethane foams. Methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) is an aromatic diisocyanate. Three isomers are common, varying by the positions of the isocyanate groups around the rings: 2,2′-MDI, 2,4′-MDI, and 4,4′-MDI. The 4,4′ isomer is most widely used, and is also known as 4,4′-diphenylmethane diisocyanate. This isomer is also known as Pure MDI. The majority of MDI is produced and used in a dense viscous liquid form called “polymeric MDI (pMDI)” which contains about 50% wt. of the 4,4’-MDI
MDI is used in the production of polyurethanes for many applications, including the manufacture of rigid polyurethane foams used for insulation in homes, commercial buildings, and appliances (e.g., refrigerators and spas).

Some additional uses of MDI in polyurethanes include coatings, adhesives, sealants, and elastomers and also it is used in items such as paints, glues, and weather resistant caulks. MDI-based polyurethanes are also used to make many types of footwear, sports and leisure products and some specialty flexible foams. MDI can also be used as a binder for composite wood products ,oriented strand board (OSB) and particleboard, and to produce mold cores for the metal casting industry.
