Lead Concentrate

A lead concentrate normally has a lead content of 60% and is made into lead after going through the refining and smelting processes. Lead concentrates are used to produce lead metal.

Lead is also used in organ pipe making, electric cable coverings, solder for plumbing, lead-acid storage batteries, ammunition, and as a radiation shield in x-ray rooms. Concentration of lead ore happens after the ore is removed from the mine, it is treated at a concentrating mill. Concentrating is generally removing the waste rock from the lead. The ore is crushed and grounded at the mill making it particles of diameters of 0.1 millimeter or less which appear to be finer than table salt, giving it granulated sugar like texture.

Different types of Lead concentrate based on the base ore  are:

  • Galena – Lead Sulphide ( PbS) : Addition of hydrogen sulfide or sulfide salts to a solution containing a lead salt, such as PbCl2, gives a black precipitate of lead sulfide. The production of primary lead is a process of extracting lead from lead sulfide concentrates by smelting.
  • Cerussite – Lead Carbonate (PbCO3)
  • Minium — Lead Oxide (PbO)
  • Anglesite – Lead Sulphate (PbSO4)
