Ethylene

Ethylene (IUPAC name: ethene) is a hydrocarbon which has the formula C2H4 or H2C=CH2. It is a colourless, flammable gas with a faint “sweet and musky” odour when pure. It is the simplest alkene and also the second simplest unsaturated hydrocarbon C2H2.

Ethylene is widely used in the chemical industry, Much of this production goes toward creating polyethylene (high density, low density and linear low density), ethylene oxide/ethylene glycols and ethylene dichloride/vinyl chloride. Significant amounts are also used to make ethylbenzene/styrene, oligomer products (e.g. alcohols and a-olefins), acetaldehyde/acetic acid and vinyl acetate .
a relatively small amount is used for the controlled ripening of citrus fruits, tomatoes, bananas and many other fruits, vegetables and flowers.

Another use is as a welding gas. It is also used as a refrigerant gas for low temperature application under the name R-1150.
The purity of ethylene is greater than 99.9 wt% and commercial production of ethylene is currently based on steam cracking of petroleum hydrocarbons.
