Aluminum Alloy 5657

An Aluminum Alloy is a composition consisting mainly of aluminum to which other elements have been added, including iron, copper, magnesium, silicon, and zinc. The addition of elements to the aluminum gives the alloy improved strength, workability, corrosion resistance, electrical conductivity, and/or density, compared with the pure metallic element.

The alloys are classified and named according to the amount and type of the alloying metals . Given widespread applications across industries, selecting the right aluminum alloy type for a specific end-use is crucial. Just slight differences in chemical properties can drastically alter strength, workability, corrosion resistance, and electrical conductivity of the alloy.

Aluminum 5657 is made from high-purity aluminum (>99.85% Al) with a small amount of magnesium addition to increase its strength. It is intended for applications that require a bright finish attained by chemical or electrochemical brightening. This brightening characteristics are poor when the alloy is in the fully soft, annealed temper so it is not usually supplied in that temper.

Aluminum 5657 is a non-heat treatable alloy that offers users workability and medium strength. Aluminum 5657 can be welded with most conventional methods including resistance welding, arc, and gas torch. This alloy can be both hot and cold formed as well as brazed.
