Alkyl benzene sulfonate (ABS) is an organic chemical compound primarily used as a surfactant. Its chemical formula is C6H5CnH2n+1, where n lies between 10 and 16.

Alkylbenzene sulfonates are a class of anionic surfactants, consisting of a hydrophilic sulfonate head-group and a hydrophobic alkylbenzene tail-group. Along with sodium laureth sulfate, they are one of the oldest and most widely used synthetic detergents and may be found in numerous personal-care products (soaps, shampoos, toothpaste etc.) and household-care products (laundry detergent, dishwashing liquid, spray cleaner etc.

The process of making ABS is by reacting Alkyl Benzene with Sulfur Trioxide, concentrated Sulfuric acid or Oleum. This reaction produces Alkyl Benzene Sulfonate

ABS is used to produce household detergents including laundry detergents, laundry liquids, dishwashing liquids and other household cleaners as well as in a variety of industrial applications.
