Infant Powder Milk, Hypoallergenic Formulas
The protein in these formulas has been partially or extensively hydrolyzed into smaller sizes, making it easier for babies with protein allergies to digest.
Hypoallergenic formula is suitable from birth but only under medical supervision. If your baby is diagnosed as being allergic to cows’ milk, a GP will prescribe an appropriate hypoallergenic infant formula with fully hydrolysed (broken down) proteins.
Comfort formula is made from partly broken down (partially hydrolysed) proteins. It’s not suitable for babies with cows’ milk allergy. Extensively hydrolyzed formulas offer complete nutrition for infants who are allergic to cow’s milk protein. Casein is a cow’s milk protein that is a common cause for allergy symptoms. Extensively hydrolyzed formulas break casein into pieces. About 90% of babies with cow’s milk allergy will tolerate these formulas. Many times, cow’s milk allergies are easily treated by switching formulas. Hypoallergenic formulas, specifically ones that are extensively hydrolyzed or amino-acid based, are allergen-friendly and more gentle on your baby than cow’s milk formulas.

Hypoallergenic formulas have a different way of processing where the proteins have been pre-digested so that the large milk proteins are broken down into smaller proteins. Extensively-hydrolyzed formulas result in the elimination of intact cow’s milk allergens, which are often recommended for most babies with a cow milk protein allergy.
