Vacuum Pressure Impregnated Transformer (VPI)
A vacuum pressure impregnated transformer (VPI) is a type of transformer that uses class H polyester resin to impregnate its windings under vacuum and pressure. This eliminates any air gaps or voids in the insulation, enhancing its mechanical strength, dielectric strength, and thermal stability.
Vacuum pressure impregnated (VPI) transformers are vacuum pressure impregnated with a high temperature polyester varnish. These transformers provide an impeccable mechanical and short circuit strength so as to favour a number of commercial and industrial applications. They considerably reduce the risk of explosion or dangers of fire in the industry, apart from eliminating other issues like liquid leaks in the containers. The windings of the vacuum pressure impregnated transformers are made in disks, which enables them to efficiently regulate the voltage of multiple electrical appliances.
A VPI is suitable for outdoor installations, seismic events, and temperature fluctuations because it has a robust construction, a moisture-resistant enclosure, and a low thermal expansion coefficient. It also has easy maintenance, low fire risk, and high resistance to short circuit currents.
A VPI is available in ratings from 5 kVA to 30 MVA, with insulation class of F (155°C) or H (180°C), and protection up to IP56.

Due to application of vacuum pressure in the VPI transformer manufacturing process, a layer of resin is made on the entire winding and core. The quality of the insulation produced is very good and it offers good moisture resistance and is effective for only moderately harsh environments. Applications like marine, mining and offshore installations where there are extremely harsh conditions like humidity, corrosive environment, and extreme temperature fluctuations, cast resin transformers are an ideal option. Due to their solid cast robust construction they can resist all types of environmental factors including saltwater and saline air.
