Chromite Ore
Chromium is extracted from chromite ore ( Chrome Ore). Chromite or is an oxide mineral composed of chromium, iron, and oxygen (FeCr2O4).
Chromite is a part of the spinel group, which means that it is able to form a complete solid solution (a mixture of two crystalline solids that coexist as a new crystalline solid) with other minerals in the same group. It is dark gray to black in colour with a metallic to submetallic luster and a high specific gravity.
Chrome ore is found in basic and ultrabasic igneous rocks and in the metamorphic and sedimentary rocks that are produced when chromite-bearing rocks are altered by heat or weathering. There are two main types of chromite deposits: stratiform deposits and podiform deposits

Chromite is the only ore from which chromium can be extracted. Chromium is an essential element for a wide variety of alloys, chemicals, and therefore manufactured products. Chromite can be used as a refractory material because it has a high heat stability.[28] The chromium extracted from chromite is used in chrome plating and alloying for production of corrosion resistant super alloys, nichrome, and stainless steel.
