Cyanoacrylate Adhesives

Cyanoacrylates are a family of strong fast-acting adhesives derived from ethyl cyanoacrylate and related esters. The cyanoacrylate group in the monomer rapidly polymerizes in the presence of moisture, which reacts instantly on exposure to air, even just a small amount of relative humidity in the atmosphere, to form long, strong chains.

cure time of cyanoacrylate is From 5 up to 90 seconds for a fixture, and from 8 to 24 hours for full curing. The cure time will depend on the surfaces engaged and primarily their moisture absorption qualities, as well as the type of cyanoacrylate used. To increase the curing speed Cyanoacrylate accelerators  can be used they are setting compounds designed to increase the cure speed of cyanoacrylate adhesives. Generally, they contain solvents—either acetone, heptane, or ethyl alcohol—which act as a carrier for the active setting ingredient (amine) and evaporate rapidly without leaving significant amounts of residue on the bonding material.

Cyanoacrylate adhesives are fast-curing, one-component adhesives that polymerize when exposed to trace amounts of moisture on the bonding surfaces. They are commonly known as instant adhesives or super glues.
They are widely used for bonding plastics, metals, rubber, ceramics, wood and various elastomers. Special grades and primers can improve bonding on difficult-to-bond plastics such as polyolefins.
Depending on the grade, substrate, humidity and bond gap, fixture time can be only a few seconds. Some commercial grades achieve fixture strength in approximately 3–20 seconds.
Low-viscosity grades flow easily into very small gaps and are suitable for capillary bonding. Higher-viscosity grades provide better gap filling and are useful when surfaces are not perfectly close-fitting. Commercial grades range from water-thin liquids to thixotropic gels.
Standard grades have limited long-term resistance to high temperatures, solvents and severe environmental exposure. However, specialized high-temperature formulations can provide substantially improved performance, with some grades designed for temperatures above 120°C.
